Brother printer guide

Brother printer test page

Print this browser sheet to test the whole path from computer to paper, then print Brother’s own Print Quality Check Sheet (inkjet) or Test Print and Drum Dot Check Sheet (laser). Brother splits toner and drum into separate parts and documents its defects unusually well, so a careful reading of two pages often names the exact part.

  • HL-L, DCP-L and MFC-L mono and color lasers
  • Menu paths for Print Quality Check, Cleaning, Alignment and Drum Dot Check

Print it right

Three settings make the test useful.

A scaled or economy-mode print can look like a printer fault. Start with a controlled print before changing ink, toner, or hardware.

01

Print the browser test at 100%

Select the paper size in the tray, keep scale at 100%, and print the Complete sheet at Normal quality with Toner Save or Ink Save Mode off and Grayscale off. This tests the app, the Brother driver, the USB or Wi-Fi link and the printer as one chain.

02

Print Brother’s own check

Inkjet: Settings or Ink → Maintenance → Improve Print Quality → Check Print Quality; the printer prints a Print Quality Check Sheet and asks whether it is OK. Laser: Menu → Print Reports → Test Print, and for repeating dots Menu → Print Reports → Drum Dot Print. On button-only HL models, pressing Go three times prints a test page.

03

Compare, then follow the printer’s prompts

The same defect on both sheets means the printer: ink, nozzles, alignment, toner or drum. A clean Brother sheet with a faulty browser page means the computer side: driver, app or connection. Brother’s inkjet menu walks you through cleaning if you answer No to the quality prompt; take it one step at a time.

Two test pages isolate the fault faster.

What you seeLikely meaningNext move
Inkjet: a color block on the Check Sheet has missing or blurred short lines

Blocked nozzles or an empty cartridge in that color. Brother inkjets have a fixed printhead; cartridges are ink containers only.

Answer No at the prompt and let the printer run Cleaning for that color. Brother’s guidance: if five cleanings do not fix it, replace that cartridge, and contact support if it still fails.

Inkjet: horizontal bands across the sheet

Paper feed is slightly off, so print passes overlap or leave gaps. This is a feed correction, not a nozzle problem.

Maintenance → Improve Print Quality → Correct Paper Feed, then reprint this sheet.

Inkjet: doubled or ragged vertical lines

Alignment has drifted after transport, a jam or a cartridge change.

Maintenance → Improve Print Quality → Alignment; pick the clearest numbered pattern when prompted, then reprint the grid.

Inkjet: smudged text on plain paper

Pigment black is not drying before the next pass or the exit rollers touch it, common on thin or coated paper.

In the driver enable Slow Drying Paper or Reduce Smudging, or use a heavier plain paper.

Laser: white vertical lines or streaks down the page

A dirty corona wire inside the drum unit is the classic Brother cause. Toner or paper dust on the wire blocks charging along a narrow band.

Remove the drum unit, slide the green tab across the corona wire several times, return it to the home (▲) position, and reprint.

Laser: dots or specks repeating every 94 mm (3.7 in)

Something is on the drum surface, often glue from a label or a toner spot. Brother’s drum circumference gives the 94 mm interval.

Print the Drum Dot Check Sheet, use its ruler to find the position, and wipe the drum at that spot gently with a dry cotton swab. Do not touch the rest of the surface.

Laser: pale print, or ‘Replace Toner’ with pages left

Toner Save is on, the cartridge is near its end, or the printer has stopped at its page count.

Turn off Toner Save, then in Menu → General Setup → Replace Toner choose Continue to print past the warning while quality holds.

Laser: ‘Replace Drum’ or ‘Drum End Soon’ after fitting a new drum

The drum counter was not reset. Brother drums carry a page counter that you reset manually on many models.

Follow the model’s Reset Drum procedure (usually by holding OK or Go with the front cover open) and the message clears.

01 / Inkjet

MFC-J and DCP-J: the Check Sheet does the diagnosis.

Brother’s Print Quality Check Sheet prints four color blocks made of short lines and then asks a question on the display: is the quality OK? Answering No starts an interactive routine that identifies the faulty color and runs cleaning for it, then reprints and asks again. That loop is well designed and worth following instead of running blind cleaning cycles from the driver.

Brother inkjets use a fixed printhead, so a cartridge is only an ink container and a new cartridge cannot fix a head fault. Brother’s own limit is five cleaning cycles: if the pattern is still broken after that, replace the cartridge for the failing color and, if it still fails, the head needs service. Horizontal banding and doubled lines have their own tools in the same menu, Correct Paper Feed and Alignment, and neither is helped by cleaning.

  • Improve Print Quality → Check Print Quality, then answer the prompt honestly
  • Correct Paper Feed for horizontal bands, Alignment for doubled verticals
  • Slow Drying Paper or Reduce Smudging in the driver for smeared pigment black
02 / Corona wire

Vertical streaks on a Brother laser: clean the wire first.

Brother lasers put a primary corona wire inside the drum unit, and toner dust on it is the most common cause of a white vertical streak or a faint gray band running down the page. Cleaning it takes a minute: unplug the printer, open the front cover, remove the toner and drum assembly, separate the toner cartridge, and slide the green tab on the drum unit gently from side to side several times. Return the tab to its home position marked with a triangle, or the printer prints a vertical stripe.

Reassemble, print the Test Print again, and only if the streak survives consider the drum surface, the transfer roller or the fuser.

  • Return the green tab to the ▲ home position before reinstalling
  • Handle the drum by its edges; fingerprints and light damage the surface
  • A streak that changes when you swap tray or paper is paper or path, not the wire
03 / Drum Dot Check

Repeating marks: measure 94 mm before buying a drum.

Brother documents a 94 mm (3.7 in) repeat interval for its drum units. A dot, smudge or blank spot that appears at that spacing down the page is on the drum surface. Menu → Print Reports → Drum Dot Print prints a Drum Dot Check Sheet with a ruler along the side; find the position of the mark on the ruler, turn the drum gear by hand to bring that spot into view, and wipe it with a dry cotton swab. Marks at other intervals belong to other rollers, and marks in the same position on every page without repeating are the paper path or the file, not the drum.

  • 94 mm repeat: drum surface
  • Same spot every page, no repeat: paper path, scanner unit or the document
  • Drum life is counted in pages; a Replace Drum message is a counter, not a quality reading
04 / Toner and drum

Two parts, two counters, two decisions.

Brother lasers separate the toner cartridge (TN) from the drum unit (DR), which is why the printer tracks them separately and why the right repair depends on the symptom. Pale print points to toner; repeating marks, gray background and vertical streaks that survive a wire clean point to the drum. Brother’s Replace Toner setting lets you choose Continue to print past the low-toner stop while quality holds, and Toner Save reduces density on purpose, so switch it off before judging a test sheet. After fitting a new drum, reset the drum counter as the manual describes, or the Replace Drum message will simply carry on.

  • Toner Save off before any test print
  • Replace Toner → Continue prints past the warning; Stop halts at the page count
  • New drum, same message: the counter needs resetting

FAQ

Questions before you print.

How do I print a test page on a Brother printer?

Inkjet: Settings or Ink → Maintenance → Improve Print Quality → Check Print Quality prints the Print Quality Check Sheet. Laser: Menu → Print Reports → Test Print; on button-only HL models pressing Go three times prints a test page. Or print the browser sheet above at 100% for a full-path test that includes CMYK blocks and a gray ramp.

What is the Brother Print Quality Check Sheet?

A page of four color blocks made of short lines, printed by the inkjet’s firmware. Missing or blurred lines show blocked nozzles or an empty cartridge in that color. The printer asks whether the quality is OK and, if you answer No, runs cleaning for the affected color and reprints the sheet. Because no computer is involved, a clean sheet proves the printhead and ink path are working.

Why does my Brother laser print white lines down the page?

Usually toner dust on the corona wire inside the drum unit. Remove the drum and toner assembly, slide the green tab across the wire several times, return it to the ▲ home position, and reprint. If a vertical stripe appears afterwards, the tab was left off its home position. If the line survives, inspect the drum surface for a scratch or debris.

What does the 94 mm interval on a Brother drum mean?

The drum’s circumference. A mark that repeats every 94 mm (3.7 in) down the page is on the drum surface. Print the Drum Dot Check Sheet from Print Reports, locate the mark with its ruler, and wipe that spot on the drum gently with a dry cotton swab. Marks at other spacings come from other rollers.

How many times can I run Brother inkjet cleaning?

Brother’s own guidance is up to five cleaning cycles for a color. If the Check Sheet is still broken after five, install a new cartridge for that color, because a nearly empty cartridge can pass the level sensor and still starve the head. If it fails with a new cartridge, the fixed printhead needs service.

Can I keep printing after ‘Replace Toner’ on a Brother laser?

Yes on most models. Menu → General Setup → Replace Toner → Continue lets the printer keep going past the low-toner stop until quality drops; Stop halts at the page count. Turn off Toner Save before judging the output, and keep a replacement cartridge ready because Continue mode is a countdown, not a fix.

Why does my Brother still say Replace Drum after I installed a new one?

The drum counter was not reset. Brother drums carry a page counter that must be reset manually on many models after replacement, usually by holding OK or Go with the front cover open until the display confirms. Follow your model’s Reset Drum procedure and the message clears.
