Print it right

Three settings make the test useful.

A scaled or economy-mode print can look like a printer fault. Start with a controlled print before changing ink, toner, or hardware.

Choose color mode

In the print dialog, select Color rather than Grayscale or Black only. Use Normal quality first—not Draft, Eco, or Photo.

Print at actual size

Set scale to 100% or Actual size, match A4 or Letter to the paper in the tray, and turn browser headers and footers off.

Inspect in good light

Let ink settle for a minute. Compare each channel, the blend ramp, the line grid, and fine text before running a cleaning cycle.

The printer can output each channel, but the driver, media profile, or paper setting may be wrong.

Reset color settings, choose the correct paper type, and test from another application.

Grid lines look doubled

Color registration or printhead alignment is off.

Run the built-in alignment routine, then print this same sheet again for comparison.

Start with CMYK, not the photo.

A photograph can hide the source of a color problem because every area mixes several inks. Separate cyan, magenta, yellow and black blocks make a weak channel obvious before the blend ramp tests how those channels work together.

  • Solid blocks should be even from edge to edge
  • The blend should change smoothly without abrupt stripes
  • Black should look neutral—not brown, blue, or washed out

A browser page is diagnostic, not a color proof.

Your screen emits RGB light while a printer places ink or toner on paper. This sheet can reveal missing channels, banding, registration and obvious balance problems, but it cannot certify Pantone, FOGRA, or press-proof accuracy without a calibrated workflow.

Questions before you print.

How do I print a color printer test page?

Choose Color / CMYK above, match the paper size, click Print test page, select Color and 100% scale in your browser dialog, then print one copy.

Why is one color missing from the test page?

The matching ink channel may be empty, incorrectly seated, dried, or clogged. Check the cartridge first, then run the printer’s own nozzle check before cleaning.

Does this color test work with laser printers?

Yes. The color blocks, gradients, grid and text checks work for color laser printers. Nozzle-specific advice applies only to inkjets; laser defects more often involve toner, drums, transfer belts, or fusers.

Should I use RGB or CMYK to test a printer?

Use both for diagnosis. Separate CMYK blocks reveal the four print channels; blended screen colors show how the driver converts and combines them. Neither replaces a calibrated press proof.
