Canon printer guide

Canon printer test page

Use this browser sheet to test the whole print path, then compare it with Canon’s built-in nozzle check or quality report to pinpoint whether the fault is in the printer or the computer.

  • Useful for PIXMA, MegaTank and imageCLASS
  • Browser test plus built-in test workflow
  • Color, black, alignment and text checks

Print it right

Three settings make the test useful.

A scaled or economy-mode print can look like a printer fault. Start with a controlled print before changing ink, toner, or hardware.

01

Print the browser test

Select the paper size, keep scale at 100%, and print the Complete sheet at Normal quality. This tests the browser, driver, connection, and printer together.

02

Run Canon’s own test

Open Maintenance in Canon PRINT or IJ Printer Assistant Tool and choose Nozzle Check or Print Check Pattern. On panel models, look under Setup or Maintenance.

03

Compare the sheets

If both sheets show the same defect, focus on ink, toner, nozzles, alignment, or hardware. If only the browser sheet fails, focus on the app or driver.

Read the result

Two test pages isolate the fault faster.

Both tests miss the same color

The issue is likely in that ink channel, cartridge, tank feed, or printhead—not the browser.

Verify ink and venting, run a nozzle check, then one cleaning cycle if the pattern has gaps.

Canon test is good; browser test is wrong

Printer hardware can reproduce the pattern. Driver, application, color mode, or connection is more likely.

Reset print preferences, update the correct model driver, and test from another app.

Vertical lines are stepped

The printhead alignment or paper feed calibration may be off on an inkjet.

Run automatic or manual Print Head Alignment from the Maintenance menu.

Laser output repeats marks

On imageCLASS models, a toner cartridge, drum, transfer component, or fuser may be involved.

Use the model’s quality report and service guidance; do not run inkjet cleaning routines.

01 / Inkjet

PIXMA and MegaTank: read the nozzle pattern first.

A nozzle check is more specific than a colorful photo. Each printed line corresponds to part of an ink channel. Missing or broken segments justify a normal cleaning; a perfect nozzle check suggests the problem is more likely alignment, paper, driver settings, or color management.

  • Check that tank vents are open where applicable
  • Wait between repeated cleaning cycles
  • Use Deep Cleaning only after the normal procedure fails
02 / Laser

imageCLASS: look for repetition and transfer defects.

Canon laser models do not have inkjet nozzles. Pale vertical bands, background toner, smears, and marks that repeat at a regular interval point toward toner distribution or a rotating imaging component. Use the built-in quality report before replacing supplies.

  • Gently redistribute toner only if the manual permits
  • Do not touch the photosensitive drum
  • Allow hot fuser areas to cool before inspection

FAQ

Questions before you print.

How do I print a test page on a Canon printer?

You can print the browser diagnostic above, or open the printer’s Setup/Maintenance menu or Canon utility and choose Nozzle Check, Print Check Pattern, or a quality report. Wording varies by model.

What is the Canon nozzle check pattern for?

It shows whether each ink channel is firing through the printhead. Broken lines or missing sections indicate blocked nozzles, poor ink flow, or an empty channel.

Why does my Canon print a good nozzle check but bad documents?

A good built-in check suggests the printer and ink path work. Reset the document’s print settings, confirm the correct driver and paper profile, and try another application.

Does this work with Canon laser printers?

Yes. Use the black, color, grid and text patterns for imageCLASS and other laser models, but follow laser-specific toner, drum and fuser guidance rather than nozzle cleaning advice.
